Pokémon Go May Cure the Symptoms of Mild Depression in Players

According to the study, the Pokémon game can help eliminate the symptoms of mild depression in people who play this game. This recent research has been conducted by the London School of Economics and Political Science and seems quite convincing when you look at the reasons for such an effect.

The school analyzed local trends in depression and compared them to the tendency to play specific mobile games in different regions. Based on the information obtained by the organization, playing Pokémon won’t alleviate clinical depression, but if a player experiences mild symptoms, the game can be helpful in those situations. The reason is that the game encourages socialization and the lack of face-to-face contact with people often worsens the symptoms of depression. What is more, people who play the game are forced to be physically active, which is another reason why it can be effective.

The obtained study first appeared in the Journal of Management Information Systems. The team working on this study bases their conclusions on Google Trends and thus they can see what words and search requests people enter most often. They pay special attention to any signs that a person from a specific region may be suffering from depression. The words such people enter as search requests may include ‘stress,’ ‘depression,’ ‘tiredness,’ and more.

The researchers analyzed 166 regions over the period of 50 weeks. The study focuses on the time frame between January 2016 and December 2016, which means that it began before the release of Pokémon Go and continued after it.
